FWIW our WinTronix IP Client (aka Synapse IP Client, WinAPPC) has always had the ability to display the hex chars of 5250 display attributes.

From the drop down menu: Session, Preferences, Show Display Attribute Values.

No problem, Jon - I guess this kind of thing has a fascination for me. I've not done this one in quite some time. Actually, for the latest documentation of one of our products, we set up PC5250 to basically be gray-scale, and the tech writer used something like Snagit - I tend to use the capture function of Paint Shop Pro.

Some of this idea goes back about 15 years - when someone I worked for used a similar technique to create sample screens for online help in OfficeVision docs.

Also, as I think of it, I'd probably make a translation table - can't use iconv - heh - and put the attributes down to the first x20 positions, to avoid weird translations into displayable ASCII characters.

I actually do think a text-based screenshot can be useful - but you never get the underlines, e.g. - that's why I went that route before

Thanks

Not to detract from your programming efforts Vern - but for documentation
purposes (why else involve Word) why not simply use Snagit to do screen
captures. Really cheap and much nicer and so easy to add callouts -
highlight screen areas etc. I can't imagine working without it these days.
