Subject: RE: When an AS/400 is called an iSeries

I really hate to make any comment on this subject but I will at least
express my own viewpoint. This is not directed at any particular
individual, just my own two cents worth.

I am a huge proponent of the i5, have been for a lot of years and
express it
every opportunity I have; however the name issue is one that many here
have
lost me on.

I will politely disagree with many who keep talking about how we are
going
to lose the platform if we do not change. I do not see this platform
going
anywhere during my lifetime and what happens after I am gone is not
something I am going to be overly worried about.

I will also say that this endless debate over the "proper" usage of the
name
has reached a point of "Name Exhaustion" with me. I am absolutely sick
to
death of listening to people constantly harp about the name, to the
point
that I now completely ignore them.

I frankly do not care what the platform is called, all I care about at
this
point in time is what can it do for me, and how it makes my life easier.
That may be a very callous attitude, and if so, I apologize if you take
it
that way; certainly not meant to offend anyone - I am just tired of the
same
old argument over what the proper name is or should be. You will always
have a select group of people that will call it a 400, others will
obviously
want to call it by whatever name IBM suggests and others still that will
propose new names. For me, it is all the same.

Now, without getting a flame war started, I have spoken for the last
time on
this particular subject; if anyone wants to comment, fine I will
probably
read them, but will not respond - I am just too tired of the debate and
consider most of it a huge waste of time. (Then again, writing this
post
would be considered by many to be a waste of time :) )

Have a wonderful week everyone!

Douglas

Aaron,

1. AS/400 - original name from 1988 to 2000
- modified with AS/400e
2. iSeries - from 2000 to 2006
- modified with eServer
3. System I - from 2006
- server name System i5

Two, and only, two changes to the name, lots of farting around with
modifying it.

I know it sounds like I am not in partnering mode, but it seems like
there
are so many people who are STILL complaining about the name change. My
frustration obviously shows. I make no apologies for that, since it
seems
this forum is full of misinformation and the spreading thereof. Darrell,
for
example, is active on this forum, and thought it was called a "Series
i".

It really is easy. The brand is System i - the servers are i5, iSeries
and
AS/400. We are family.

As for the partnering... Where is it? Agreeing or debating on a public
forum
is easy, but it is not partnering. iSociety had a video contest
recently,
and only a few people came. Everyone seems to want to put their two
complaint cents in, but it is so hard to get people to contribute
ANYthing..

I know that few of us have time to spit outside of our normal
maintenance
programming jobs and emailing midrange-L, but without a little effort
this
platform of ours is going away. I don't want to see that. My frustration
comes in the misinformation being spread, the complaints about the
"many"
name changes, the willingness to talk but not act....

And how many people have actually told someone else about the System i
outside their IT department? How about your company management? We have
been
given a new brand name for the best platform on the planet, and if
someone
does not agree with that particular name, or is not willing to
understand
it, they stick with the name that will take them to their IT grave
early.

Send me ANYthing! I will find a place to post it, and we can spread the
word. I have been swamped myself in moving to a new state and a new job,
but
am starting to catch up. You can post to www.i4everyone.com - marketing
ideas galore. If you have other stuff, you can post it to
www.ibitsandpieces.com (which reminds me, where is that i-i-i-i ring
tone I
created.. I must post it). And, you can send me stuff for posting at
www.angustheitchap.com.

If not to me, find a place to post it and make some noise about it. My
campaign is "make some noi5e!" No noi5e, no i5.

Or, sit behind your desk and program in between writing emails.
Your choice.
Your future.

AS/400 is dead. Long live the System i.
Get off your Green/AS.

P.S. Aaron, the "you" to whom I am referring is the generic - not the
specific.

You posted incorrect information to a public forum. Michael and I
were
simply correcting you.

I think a lot of us want to partner with you and your endeavors, but
you
just aren't in partnering mode - you are in "beat them with the 'name
stick'" mode. Again, you have a great campaign going on, but there
are
parts that just don't sit well when you are trying to create forward
motion
in the community.

The "number" of names is a poor excuse for not accepting the current
brand
name.

"Look at poor us, what we have to endure with all these name
changes..."
Just a cop-out for those who dislike change.
