The result of OPNQRYF is NOT a file. It is an open data path - an access plan. It is all virtual. UPDDTA is working against the original file - it can't work against an ODP.

So to do what you want, follow the other poster's advice and use CPYFRMQRYF - but you don't do an override when using that, generally. Others can speak to this more - the override is only to get the RPG programs to use the ODP created by OPNQRYF.

Anyway, think about moving to embedded SQL - much more power there.
