One thing missing from this picture is the proportional volume of IBM
business outsourced within the USA to various "partners" and 3rd party
outfits. I'd estimate 1% of creation and sales of IBM products and
services come from people working directly for IBM while 99% from the
outsourced, so for the job market of people who know IBM stuff, the real
threats are not IBM's mix of staff / growth where in world, but
* the degree to which IBM "partners", 3rd party world, and customers use
off-shoring,
* whether any key components of IBM hardware or OS end up being made by
some enterprise whose quality falls from IBM historical standards, quality
of IBM testing to identify this, and quality of contract to be able to do
anything about it,
* and the usual competition from other platforms, where quality is
irrelevant compared to the perceptions of non-technical leadership.
