I don't think that'll work as DB2 will try to convert it and fail.

I had a different scenario that may apply. A char column with binary data in
it (i.e. INTEGER). I could not figure out a way to do it with SQL alone as
it would always try to convert thinking it's char data.

In essence both you and I were after raw data, but there is no way to tell
DB2 engine to give it to us raw (well, other than in a program variable, as
you say, your application works fine).

So, what I had to do is create a UDF that simply gives me the data raw (no
conversion). Works great.
