Several ways to do this.
1 - Exit points used by SQL. A popular way to do that is via exit point
software. But you wanted to avoid purchasing software (why do I keep
thinking of the forging of a hammer example given recently?).
2 - If you want to report on all updates you could use trigger programs.
You could even add fields to a file and update them yourself. Picture
adding "Last Updated date" and "updated by" fields. Your trigger could
examine it's call stack and determine if the update was done via STRSQL
etc., and if so, alert someone.
