The mats which have a grounding wire work very well from my personal
experience. When I worked in Minnesota where there are dry winters that
compound the static problem I made it worse by having rubber soled shoes. 2
times I rushed to my phone over the carpet, picked it up and said, "AAAARG"
as I got a big shock from the phone receiver to my chin. We installed a
static mat as well as a smaller mat under my phone. Both had cords that I
screwed into the face plate of an electrical outlet. I never had the problem
again.

Your mileage may vary since you are in a larger room.

We seem to have a worse-than-usual case of static electricity problem this
year, not only all through the building but especially worrisome in the
computer room. Our night operator is worried because he's had a static
charge released several times when reaching for a tape (a backup that just
finished). That can't be good. I know about the mats you can get to stand
on, but it would take an awful lot of them to solve our problem. Is there
something the operator can wear or do that will help this problem?

Your comments please.
