This is the same approach Kronos Workforce Central uses when generating documents. Create a document in Word. Insert tags, such as [person-last-name]; then save as XML or HTML. Upload to the Kronos server. When Kronos generates a document, it searches for the tags and replaces with the appropriate values. Ideally they want to be able to generate the document on the iSeries
and place it in the IFS where Word can find it. I also thought about generating an RTF file and including replacement codes such as %%ORDERNO%% which the programs could overwrite with the correct values, but on looking at an RTF file's structure it looked too prone to errors. I might be inclined to save off the Word doc I want in RTF format, incorporating field markers in the doc. Then use that as an "HTML" template for a CGIDEV2 program which would fill in the blanks and write the resulting doc to the IFS. SHouldn't be that hard - maybe I'll give it a shot when I have 5.
