John,

Biggest advantage is that LPD/LPR only has communication one-way. The
printer really doesn't send any status info back to the iSeries. From
the iSeries Printing VI Redbook:
The characteristics of the remote output queue include:
* There is no error checking or recoverability.
* The entire spooled file is sent.
* Page range selection is not honored.
* There is no device description.
* The writer is started using the STRRMTWTR command. The writer can be
started automatically by a spooled file arriving on the queue, if
required.

SNMP/IPP/PJL all provide two-way comms.

IBM recommends SNMP/IPP/PJL over RMTOUTQ always.

IBM's Rodney Johnson, Technical Team Lead for AS/400 Spool, first choice
is SNMP, followed by IPP, followed by PJL.

We have a large number of remote outqs here, although not as many as
800. I was
asked one time what advantage a device offered over a remote outq. I
can think
of several, but wonder if there is a kist somewhere of definitive
advantage/disadvantages.

You have 800 IP printers and you're still using LPD/LPR via
RMTOUTQ's...why?

Use SNMP/IPP/PJL instead.

Set up the OUTQ using the follow as a basis. I have 800
IP connected
printer on one of the 11 LPARs I administer.

CRTOUTQ OUTQ(QUSRSYS/UTEST)
        RMTSYS(UTEST.X.X)
        RMTPRTQ('*none')
        AUTOSTRWTR(1)
        CNNTYPE(*IP)
        DESTTYPE(*OTHER)
        MFRTYPMDL(*HP5)
        DESTOPT('XAIX')
        TEXT('Printer Name - Model Info - Location')

If you use only IP addresses then there are two params to change:
     RMTSYS (*INTNETADR)
     INTNETADR 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx'

Good Luck

Is anyone using a HP laserjet 8100 attached via IP on a iSeries?

I'm having a fun time getting the iSeries to talk to the
HP...would be
interested in any devd's if you have one to spare... We
think we're
down to a SNMP error but it would be nice to have a devd for
comparing.

TIA
