Richard,

The cache battery protects the write cache on the disk controller.
Given the large caches now-a-days, battery protection is very important.
Without it, you'd be looking at a reload if the UPS/power failed.

My Dell servers have battery protected caches also, it's not an iSeries
thing. In fact, on the Dell's the cache battery and cache memory are
package together and may be removed from the controller card. This way,
if the card fails, you can move the cache with its contents intact over
to a new card. I don't know that the iSeries cards are the same, but
I'd have to believe that the 2780 w/757MB of cache might be.

HTH,

Subject: i5 Cache Battery

Hello All,

We just got a warning today on our i5 that the cache battery
is dying.

That seems to be such an odd component to still be required
on the iSeries
with today's technology.

Since everything else is run off the power supply, why would a cache
battery still be needed in today's day and age ? :-)

We've run into this problem regularly starting back from the
170 days.

I'm interested to hear any comments.

Regards,
Richard Schoen
