Probably a big-endian vs. little-endian issue.
http://www.cs.umass.edu/~verts/cs32/endian.html

iSeries is big-endian
PCs are little-endian.

The bit swapping going on would effect packed data.

Subject: why ftp packed ascii to ifs doesnt work

I'm trying to understand why a ftp put (with bin) from Win Server
to iSeries ifs alters the file data if packed data exists in the file.
I thought "bin" would move the file as is. There should be no
ascii to ebcdic
in going to the ifs. Dealing with about a hundred different
files and many packed fields.
I see (thru google) this same problem exists in the unix and
mainframe world.
(Was probably sleeping thru this part of Computing 101..)
