Hi, I've got this upgrade to do the middle of next year and appreciate this. -----Original Message----- From: justin.haase@xxxxxxxxxxxx To: midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Mon, 11 Dec 2006 11:47 AM Subject: V5R3 to V5R4 - upgrade in review All, Having performed the 3rd V5R4 upgrade here this weekend (only 6 or 7 to go...), I can say with confidence that V5R3 to V5R4 is the best OS upgrade I've ever had the pleasure of performing. Granted, I've only been doing it since V4R3, so I can't reminisce about how awesome V2R1 was. ;) Been using image catalogs. Here's a little cheat-sheet o' commands if anyone's interested. YMMV, but it certainly has some helpful commands that are easier to cut-and paste. My IFS directory of the media looks like the item below. Also - I used the IBM .bin files and made my own .iso, interchangable as you can see in the file names. With the image catalogs the upgrade itself including PTFs on decent LPARs is only taking 1.5-2 hours. This is a 4-way 570 POWER5+ with 48 GB of RAM, so yours might vary depending on system. Also, the LPAR with 6 arms took about twice as long as the one with 45. /upgrade /v5r3m0_ptf /v5r4m0_med /v5r4m0_cum /v5r4m0_grp Pre-upgrade: Load the pre-install PTFs: CRTIMGCLG IMGCLG(V5R3M0_PTF) DIR('/upgrade/v5r3m0_ptf') ADDIMGCLGE IMGCLG(V5R3M0_PTF) FROMFILE('prepptf.iso') TOFILE(*FROMFILE) LODIMGCLG IMGCLG(V5R3M0_PTF) DEV(OPTVRT01) OPTION(*LOAD) insptf licpgm(*ALL) dev(optvrt01) instyp(*IMMDLY) *** have not been any PTFs applied on any systems so far *** LODIMGCLG IMGCLG(V5R3M0_PTF) DEV(OPTVRT01) OPTION(*UNLOAD) CRTIMGCLG IMGCLG(V5R4M0_MED) DIR('/upgrade/v5r4m0_med') ADDIMGCLGE IMGCLG(V5R4M0_MED) FROMFILE(V5R4M0_01.iso) TOFILE(*FROMFILE) ADDIMGCLGE IMGCLG(V5R4M0_MED) FROMFILE(V5R4M0_02.iso) TOFILE(*FROMFILE) ADDIMGCLGE IMGCLG(V5R4M0_MED) FROMFILE(V5R4M0_03.iso) TOFILE(*FROMFILE) ...
