After spending some hours on this problem, I finally figured out the answer, 
but only after asking for help, of course.

The certificate was for a different server name.  I was attempting to connect 
to the bank's test server, but the certificate was for the production server.  
Aaaaggggghhh!

Sorry to have bothered anyone.
