Are you sure about that DVD-R? AFAIK, the iSeries only supports DVD-RAM. Which is different than DVD-R or DVD+R. As Rob pointed out, it is very slow. You can however, make use of the virtual optical support to write to an image file the DUPOPT to the actual disk. I'd only consider it if you can fit your backup on a one or two disks.
