What, AIX doesn't have an annual maintenance fee?
you know, I think they just raised the price. $1200 per year for AIX on a 4 core p5: http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/p/hardware/entry/505q/91151f7a.html the 170 44P I purchased on ebay came with the latest AIX. I dont use it enough to know if I need PTFs, but I dont think so. The Linux toolkit for AIX is a no charge download. The last I checked DB2 was available for a no charge evaluation period. What I am learning about AIX is it is better to use Linux. The AIX file system is different from Linux and it has some sort of file journaling. But so does Linux. I did an install of SUSE Linux on a PC last week that worked real well. Actually easier than a Windows XP install in that it recognized my SATA drive without the Windows hassle of a driver from a diskette. As good as the p5 hardware is I dont see the point of running Linux on it. And since AIX is no better, what is the point of p5 hardware compared to Intel? Now if you could run i5/OS on it, that would be a different story. Big Blue is setting itself up for a big fall. -Steve
