What I cannot remember is how to get these devices to login
automatically.  I am almost positive we did it once before, but that was
years ago.

In my searches I came across the Telnet Exit Programs, but I am not
sure if they can actually handle logging in for a device.  I see how to
deny access, but not how to automatically grant it.

Am I missing something obvious?

Have you checked the docs for the 5250 emulator you are running on those 
handhelds? It may already support this function without having to do something 
esoteric on the iSeries side.
