Why don't they just port OS/400 to the z platform? That would be a lot cheaper and get the same results.
Mike: 1) Over the last three years I have heard IBM'ers hint that the mainframe will be assimilated into the Power product line. From a hardware perspective, this makes a lot of sense - they can consolidate manufacturing of the z, p, and i boxes. 2) AFAIK, the OS/400 - i5/OS instruction set is a SUPERSET of the mainframe instruction set, thus making it easier to port MVS to the i5 rather than the other way around. - sjl
