Just in case it will be of help for you - I am using tn5250 on both the current and previous releases of Kubuntu (Ubuntu with KDE window manager). A couple of things I did to make things work more smoothly were to set up a 'profile' in the terminal emulator (Konsole in my case) which sets a different font size when I run tn5250 from a desktop icon.
Or use x5250 instead....
I also found the keyboard layout to be a bit difficult to get used to after using exclusively Client Access. The keys are configurable - see http://archive.midrange.com/linux5250/200304/msg00001.html for details.
