Several have been bitten by not following the pre-install steps that ensure certain ptfs are installed and the load source has been properly sized. V5R4 should come with a pre-install V5R3 ptf cd. Also, check the planning site to ensure all your hardware & software is supported in next release.
I think more time is spent in pre-install than actual install.
Also note IBM no longer ships latest cume with the new release cd's. Have to order separate, and I would order and apply appropriate groups, depending upon what you use.
I'm taking a small i5 from v5r3 to v5r4 this weekend.

Subject: Upgrade considerations V5R3 to V5R4

Hi all,

I've been tasked with ensuring that there are no changes to system APIs
that will affect us when upgrading to V5R4. I've read through the
Memorandum to Users, and all seems to be well. I know that API changes
are not common - is reading the Memo sufficient to conclude that APIs have
not changed, or is there some other documentation I should consult?

Any other tips for making the upgrade smooth are welcome.

TIA,
Adam
