Quick answers:
1. Yes.

2. Yes.

The answer to 2. is definitely Yes. For 1., the answer is Yes
conceptually. In reality, you do want to test this periodically to make
sure the DR machine's tape drive can read tapes create on the production
machine. Assuming your 3582 is using LTO2 drives, this shouldn't be a
problem.

Also, when restoring from one machine to another, after restoring you
may have to do some resource matching to get the same system definitions
for things like communications cars to work right on the DR machine. I
strongly recommend you review the Backup & Recovery manual for your OS
version at http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iseries/ .

BTW, while LTO2 tapes can store 400GB compressed, that's based on the
assumption of 2:1 compression. If your system contains more data than
applications, you will likely get a better ratio. We get closer to
3.5:1 here, enabling around 700GB per LTO2 tape (although we migrated to
LTO3 for the speed boost).

Subject: SAVSYS RESTORE FROM LPAR TO 810

I performing a savsys21 for the sake of recovery, from a production
LPAR, on a model 810, to a Ultirium 3582 tape library.

I want to take this tape(s) and restore to an indentical model 810
running an IBM tape drive 3580 model H23, single drive.

Tapes are LTO2 200/400Gb compressed.

My questions are:

#1. Can I do recover from tape from/to the tape drives in this way,
conceptually?
and
#2. I have always used tape libraries and not single drives. So, if my
savsys21 is more than one tape due to the 500Gb size of the prod
savsys21 spanning 2 tapes, will the restore, on the single drive, prompt
for the second tape?
