We use BRMS on all our i5 systems. The older boxes use standard IBM
backup. We have the network option enabled so the systems can share a
pool of tapes, pretty cool.

We also use Mimix from Lakeview - we have it set up so the control group
ends each datagroup's apply sessions, runs the save of the affected
libs, and then restarts the datagroup - I think it's pretty slick, and
since it's using LTO3 on fibre, it's very fast. Besides, it's off the
DR box, so it's not a huge deal how fast it is - it's nice to have the
speed though, believe me. These System i machines spoil you quickly -
we have a 740 12-way with 140 arms. Back in the day that thing was a
monster - 4550 CPW - yeeeaah! Anyway, that system takes 30 mins to save
a 25 GB lib to savefile - a 550 with 32 arms takes 2 minutes. WOOT!
Let's not even get in to how much better fibre channel is than HVD SCSI,
either. ;)

Have done full restores on a test and QA box - the procedures are very
nice from BRMS. Do single-file and lib restores all the time as sanity
checks - WRKOBJBRM is neat - I can't believe how nice BRMS makes the
backup and recovery process.

Highly recommended. If you have any other questions, feel free to
contact me off-list.

Subject: BRMS

How many folks on this list use BRMS to handle all of their backup and
recovery needs? Does anyone use BRMS as part of their High Availability
Solution? Has anyone done a full system restore using BRMS?

We are quickly moving towards not having any time for a traditional
downtime for Backups. I want to get a leg up on solutions that shrink
that backup window as much as possible, before I'm asked to provide such
a solution. I had heard that BRMS will allow you to perform Full system
backups and incremental backups while active.

Any advice is appreciated.
