I use the FTP server provided in i5/OS. Works marvelously and then it's where you can find it and back it up too!

I'd load the fixes and try again - a scratch install and reconfig of
your HMC doesn't really take that long anyway - in the off chance that a
fix breaks something.  I do recall there being a problem with that
backup process that was addressed in a fix.  I've never had any backup
to DVD take more than 5-10 mins.
Plus - I'm hard-core, running HMC 6.1 - WOOT!  No problems here.
