Now there's an interesting thought.  The listing would presumably show up in 
the f.t.p. log file.

Perhaps you could use the FTP ls command to get a directory listing, then 
search that list to see if the file in question exists.  Depending on the total 
number of files possible on the Windows server this might be 
problematic.  There may be a way to do 'ls filename.ext' as well ... then 
see if the results show the file or not.
