I know you said COBOL, but V5R4 added some nice stuff to RPGLE to write XML directly. Don't know if they did anything with COBOL in V5R4. Have a gent here who has used the XML tools early on. Soon as we put V5R4 on our development box and he saw what they did with RPG he was chomping at the bit to get V5R4 on our production box. Now that we do, he's quite happy.
Actually, V5R4 only added support for _reading_ XML to RPG. COBOL got read-XML support in V5R3, and write-XML support in V5R4.
