Tar works great on iSeries. You need 5722SS1 option 30 installed (should be
there already). You can run the tar command from a CL program using
something like this:

           CHGVAR     VAR(&W_CMDSTR) VALUE('tar -xfv ' || &STMF +
                        |> '\*.dat')

           QSH        CMD(&W_CMDSTR)

Make sure your path includes /usr/bin (it should unless someone changed it).
Check it by running command QSH and type export and press Enter.

Subject: Question on using a TAR file on a iSeries system

We have a potential of receiving a file from a outside source
that will
have been created using a TAR. Has anyone experience using
this type of
file on a iSeries system. If so, any suggestions.

Sincerely,

Bill Swann
