James,

I just came across this:

And in the meantime I came across this:

http://www.pdflib.com/products/more/jpeg2ps.html

which is a command line utility for changing a jpg into an EPS by simplly
adding postscript wrappers around the jpg image data. IOW, postscript can
actually take the image in jpg format without converting the compressed
image bytes. That means that I may well be able to leave jpg's in the IFS,
then add my own wrappers based on how the above works. Or just batch
convert my jpg's into EPS, and insert those.

I have not yet really begun to study the postscript data stream, but I've
worked with many different data streams in the past so learning enough to
pull off the paradigm you do plus also insert dynamic jpg images may not be
that difficult. It is at least worth taking a closer look at it.

It is a very simple introduction and includes a section on inserting
images. Scroll nearly two-thirds of the way down to the heading Drawing
"small" Images.

It's not the software that's free; it's you.
