Herb - I'm going to jump in where I barely know something!!

The iSeries can work fine with SANs, as long as the right controller 
card or whatever is on it. As to applications and databases, those 
must reside in libraries, so whatever storage you have must be seen 
as the equivalent of locally-installed DASD. As I say, this is 
possible. I ran some tests of our software on a system that IBM 
supplied  for TotalStorage status. It is very cool to see one of 
IBM's Shark units act like native DASD.

I don't know whom you should talk to - find a business partner that 
understands - EMC might have the knowledge you need.

If you are talking about IFS stuff (non library, not application, non 
database), then something like NFS can be a great way to do things - 
Network File System - assuming your SAN can be seen with that protocol.
