There is something called VPD - vital product data. Apparantly the VPD is stored in firmware - probably a ROM chip. It is know about in the AIX world http://groups.google.com/group/comp.unix.aix/search?group=comp.unix.aix&q=vital+product+data&qt_g=1&searchnow=Search+this+group My guess is the i5 is a p5 with different values stored in the VPD chip. -Steve
