No, I had done that part correctly. It seems I had ordered my CD "too
early". IBM knew about this problem when I called. They had me download a
new image & try to burn it to a CD. But I had issues with the image. So I
just ordered the new CD & rescheduled for a different weekend.

I just hated that every time I called the help desk at IBM it took them an
hour to return my Severity 1 call. It really puts a cramp on the whole
thing.

I have run a half dozen V5R4 upgrades so far. Only problem to date is
coming from V5R2 the allocation additional LIC space option on LICPGM
option 5 (prepare for upgrade) doesn't give enough space. The
documentation has the correct API call in it to get the space required
and once that's done the upgrade works fine.

At least two of the upgrades were machines with Ops Console, no problems
with either console.

There are some memory leak issues in V5R4 with the query optimizer. The
fixes are in the latest DB group for V5R4 and V5R3.

The second weekend we ended up doing the upgrade from the CDs instead of
the
image catalog, because I didn't know that an IPL would unload the image
catalog. So when I did the first IPL after my backup, it unloaded
everything (I thought I was ahead of the game). Instead it took an hour
and
still no amber light, I just called IBM who had me stop the process &
start
over with a manual IPL from the control panel & load source "D".

I guess I get to live & learn the hard way.

All,

The V5R4 upgrade over the weekend was a nightmare. I'm too busy putting
out

fires to go into great details but wanted to put out a warning.

We use Ops Console directly attached. The installation failed and I had
to

call IBM. The Ops Console PC is connected via USB cable to the i5. This
is

how the IBM BP installed it. According to IBM support this connection
(the

USB cable) IS NOT SUPPORTED FOR OS UPGRADES. When quizzed on why it has

worked for a year, his response was that upgrades stress it much more than

day-to-day operations. Fortunately I had kept 1 3180 twinax display for

just such an occasion. We switched to a twinax console and the
save/restore

people walked me through recovery.
