One experience with cache batteries makes me careful about replacing them.

We had one that needed to be replaced so we put in a service call. For some
reason the CE didn't shut the machine down normally he simply forced the power
off. Whatever was in cache memory did not get written to disk so we ended up
with several damaged objects, requiring us to reload them from tape.

So my only warning is make sure you power the machine down normally before you
replace the battery.

Subject: Cache Battery question
Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2006 07:30:08 -0600

About 4 months ago I got a heads up that the cache battery on our model
800 was soon going to fail. So I read the FAQ's, located a replacement
battery, forced the failure on the battery, replaced it and all was
well. I thought.

Today we got an SRC 5703 8008 indicating the cache battery failed. So
either I didn't replace the battery correctly OR the new battery has
actually failed. I am guessing the former. Is there a way to trick the
system into thinking that the battery was replaced? I am thinking that
I can just run the -FORCE option on the BATTERYINFO macro to force the
failure, remove the battery (I'll test it just in case) and then put the
battery back in. Do I need to charge (or discharge) the battery to make
it seem like it is a different battery or is just removing it for a few
minutes to test it OK?

Thanks,

Pete Helgren
