Jerry, Maybe I missed something, but did you look at creating remote output queues? I've got one client who sends reports from a machine in Chicago to one in California whenever their inventory control system determines that items on orders can be more cost effectively be shipped from the location out there. The box in California is not used for anything else except as a DR site. The printers in California are still twinax attached.
