In fact, it came out in V5R1 to be used only for OS upgrade. Its
function was enabled with PTFs. V5R2 and higher it's free to be used
for any/all purposes and came bundled in base OS. In V5R1 you can only
name the catalogs QUPGRADE1, QUPGRADE2, QUPGRADE3. V5R2+ you can name
them anything you want.

It's really a fantastic feature - can't imagine doing an OS upgrade
without it. PTFs, OTOH, tend to be a pain in the tailside and I'd
prefer to spin through CDs or use iPTF.

Came out at the tail end of V5R2 primarily as an upgrade path to V5R3.
Really came out strong on V5R3. Basically you can load new releases,
cumes, other ptf's, etc, into an image catalog and not have to worry
about changing CD's during the actual upgrade itself.
Directions to use are normally in cume ptf cover letters or software
upgrades in Infocenter. These instructions are very close.
CRTDEVOPT DEVD(OPTVRT02) RSRCNAME(*VRT)
CRTIMGCLG IMGCLG(CUME) DIR('/fixes/cume') ADDIMGCLGE IMGCLG(CUME)
FROMDEV(OPT01) or ADDIMGCLGE IMGCLG(CUME)
FROMFILE('/fixes/cume/cume_01.bin')
TOFILE(*fromfile)
(repeat ADDIMGCLGE for each CD or downloaded file) WRKIMGCLG LODIMGCLG
IMGCLG(CUME) DEV(OPTVRT02) OPTION(*LOAD) VFYIMGCLG IMGCLG(CUME)
TYPE(*PTF) SORT(*YES) INSPTF LICPGM((*ALL)) DEV(OPTVRT02)
INSTYP(*DLYALL) (which is the command that GO PTF option 8 uses)

What exactly is an image catalog?

Debbie,

I have loaded PTFs and upgraded to V5R3 utilizing the image catalog. I
like it because it can be unattended, and is faster than loading a CD,
waiting for the i5 to ask for the next CD, etc. It does not take much
setup, and so I would call it easy.

Good Luck!
