Is there an API to retrieve relational database entries? -- MIDRANGE-L

Does anyone know if there is an API to do the equivalent of the DSPRDBDIRE
command but that can be easily called from an RPG program?.  

I need to verify that an entry is or is not in the RDB table but would
rather not have to output to a spooled file or database file to do the
verify.
