My guess is virtual tape would work just fine in the scenario you have. That assumes you have the disk available. If you have the time you could still use compaction in the same ASP. It will be slower than optimum but I don't believe it would be any slower than save files. (That is entirely a guess. I have no data to back up that statement other than a gut feel.) It would be simpler than save files since you are only messing with one object IMHO. Yeah, that's what i'm picturing Virtual Tape to involve from reading the Redbook. We have a pretty simple need where we're moving one of our boxes out to a location in our plant (3/4 mile away) where we don't want to visit every day to change backup tapes. We were curious to see if it would help us much with doing the backup (3 small libraries and the IFS to cover Domino and WAS) out there (automated thru a program) to virtual tape and then sending the virtual tape to a box here to be either spun to tape or covered by the local box's nightly backup. It looks like for our purposes it may be much simpler to save the remote data to several save files, ftp them to a library on a local box, and then include that library in the local box's nightly. It may come in handy for some other uses in the future i'm sure... Please respond to Midrange Systems Technical Discussion <midrange-l@midra nge.com> Chad, I talked to a different beta customer last week and he loved the virtual tape support. From talking to him he set it up using the recommended method Debbie Saugan discussed at COMMON. That would be a separate ASP with enough drives to handle the I/O workload. The other major thing you need to watch out for is: there is effectively no compression/compaction. By that I mean that the recommendation is that you do not use the compaction parameter because it will slow down the virtual tape performance since there is no hardware assist like there is on physical tape drives. The major problem with there is that if you want to use virtual tape to backup 1TB of data you need 1TB of free space for the virtual tape images. My best advice is: Plan, Plan, Plan, Test, Plan some more, test some more!! Al, Can you elaborate on what you mention about virtual tape performance? I just read most of the virtual tape Redbook yesterday and was surprised to learn about how it was structured (I had only heard some general announcements about it). Please respond to Midrange Systems Technical Discussion <midrange-l@midra nge.com> I am still at pre-G/A code, because IBM is having a problem shipping my G/A software. I have a promise for delivery on Friday. V5R4 is a great release (even at pre-GA). That makes for 3 outstanding ones in a row (with V5R4 probably being the best). You know what that means about the next one:-))))) In truth, I think that they have firmed up their quality processes. Had a lot of trouble getting my brain around virtual tape, and now that I have, it's not performing well. I have an open problem, but what you should be worried about is the old stuff which for the most part is ginger peachy keen. No responses. So I'll ask again in this way. How many are at v5r4 now (and how smooth is it) or have plans to upgrade soon? Have 2 customers who want to do it at end of May. jim franz -- This is the Midrange Systems Technical Discussion (MIDRANGE-L) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-l or email: MIDRANGE-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l. -- This is the Midrange Systems Technical Discussion (MIDRANGE-L) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-l or email: MIDRANGE-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l. ________________________________________________________________________ _____ Scanned by IBM Email Security Management Services powered by MessageLabs.
