Going to a  170 interim is  fine, BUT be aware  there are  caveats.
The tape drive options to migrate to an i5 series/system become limited. After V5R2 supported tape drives which are comparable dwindle down to a few. Yes you can use one for the external drives if you have an expansion unit to support a 2729 feature card

Jim's already pointed out this, but it is worth repeating:

You can't install anything earlier than v5r3 on the 520.

There isn't a supported migration path from a v4r4 150 to a v5r3/v5r4
520.  Plain and simple.

You've got two choices:
1) Roll your own / pay for somebody with the expirence to pull this off.
2) Buy a intermediate junk machine.  Al mentioned a 170 as supporting
v4r4 - v5r3.  Move to the 170 then upgrade the 170 to v5r1 and then to
v5r3.  Then move to the 520.  Al mentioned that the 170s are just about
free now-a-days.


With option 2 is "easier" and you're at least moving along a supported
IBM upgrade path.
