Rob (and Vern),

After poking around in the info center it *seems* like Appendix D is the answer. I am a little concerned about the "same OS levels" though. The 270 is running V5R3M0 with the latest CUME and group PTF's and I think that the new i5 (the Power5+ hardware) is running V5R3M5 (LIC-not sure). Rob, you had a post in February about an 8xx to 520 upgrade and recommended loading LIC from the new system CD's and then loading the OS from the SAVSYS tape of the old system (if I understood the posts correctly). Would that be the recommendation in a 270 to 520 upgrade as well? The only wrinkle from my perspective is getting the V5R3M5 CUME and group PTF's in time since I know they won't be included in the install media on the new i5.

Both the 270 and 520 have compatible tape drives so I may be able to skip the install from CD and apply PTF approach and just restore from tape. Correct?

Here is what I am considering (following Appendix D with the following changes):

1. SAVSYS on the 270 and new 520
2. IPL the 520 from the 520 SAVSYS and install the LIC
3. When it comes time to install the OS, swap tapes and install the OS from the 270 SAVSYS

Other steps in Appendix D remain the same.

Is this a solid approach or should I look at alternatives?

Thanks.

Pete

I always upgrade to the same OS level as will be on the new machine. Then I follow Appendix D of the Backup and Recovery Guide.

Don't know if IBM still publishes the "Risc to Risc upgrade guide" (not to be confused with the cisc-to-risc upgrade guide).
