IBM does tend to try to vex you, don't they?  At a regular 5250 command 
line, this is valid
wrklnk '/qsys.lib/*.lib'

However, within a ftp session, this is not
> namefmt 1 
  250  Now using naming format "1".
  Server NAMEFMT is 1. 
  Client NAMEFMT is 1. 
> ls '/qsys.lib/*.lib' 
  227 Entering Passive Mode (10,10,1,213,201,104).
  501 Character (*) not allowed in object name. 

But this is ok
> ls '/rob*' 
  227 Entering Passive Mode (10,10,1,213,94,41).
  125 List started. 
  /ROB/ 
  /robpdf/ 
  /robb13/ 
  /robg/ 
  250 List completed. 

Go figure.
