Discovery about using QSHELL functionality outside of a QSHELL session

Some months back, based on suggestions from a number of MIDRANGE-L members, I learned that it was possible to call the QSHELL RM utility directly, without actually invoking a QSHELL session, and developed a CL front-end for it, a "DELTREE" command.
I just now discovered that there is a hidden flaw in this somewhat unorthodox usage. It seems that it leaves something persistently open, in a way that if you do it enough times in a single job (i.e., a few hundred), you end up with one of the errors I asked about, the week before last, with respect to my directory-to-zip-archive project. Namely, it eventually causes any usage of QSHELL functionality, including simply opening a QSHELL session, to fail with 
  ERROR 3025 FOUND OPENING MESSAGE CATALOG
  /QIBM/PRODDATA/OS400/SHELL/MRI2924/SHELL.CAT.
While any suggestions on how to avoid this (beyond the obvious option of eliminating unsupported use of QSHELL utilities) would be appreciated, as would any insights into what could be happening under the covers, I'm mainly posting this discovery on an FYI basis.
