Now, I have done unload/reload's and I do like that. There is an alternative that might work for you. Keep in mind that V5R3M5 is LIC only. SS1 stays at V5R3M0. You could boot the new machine off of the V5R3M5 LIC media. Basically you are still doing Appendix D of the Backup and Recovery Guide. But this way allows you to at least get the disks formatted and the LIC installed prior to reloading the OS and the rest of the stuff from the existing V5R3M0 machine. This saves time - especially the disk formatting time. Have a cume and hipers for V5R3M5 on hand to load/apply those ptfs after the restore - because with this method you will lose all of your LIC ptf's. On step 3 of Appendix D you use the LIC media. This kind of a restore is not uncommon. In fact, if you have many of the tape models you cannot do step 3 from backup because (and forgive me if I have the terminology wrong) of the difference between "alternative IPL device" and "alternative installation device". http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v5r4/topic/books/sc415304.pdf Done right none of your system values, etc will be lost. None of that is part of LIC. ps: V5R4 is on it's third regular cume and it's 4th hiper group. Even so, it's still rather new. I have two lpar's to go before I'm an all V5R4 shop. That last lpar will be April 7. Rob Berendt
