In a former job, (about 8 years ago) I worked for a company developing and
installing warehouse management software. We installed and tested almost
every brand available at the time, dependng on the customer's wishes.
However, in my experience, Intermec and Teklogix are the most reliable and
best supported. LXE is also up the list pretty high, but Symbol equipment
was always the worst and we couldn't stand working with them. We had more
trouble with their units breaking and just plain not functioning reliably
enough. Many of the customers we installed systems for, wound up buying
twice as many Symbol units because of their poor reliability and problems. I
realize this has been a while, and things may have changed, hopefully they
have for Symbol's sake.

In my current job, we use nothing but Intermec, which we've had very little
trouble with since upgrading to them 4 years ago. We chose not to write any
barcode apps on the units, but use simple, small screen apps on the iSeries
that are run on the RF units via Telnet. It's a very simple, yet efective
solution.
