Writiing to DVD

The current thread about saving the IFS to DVD reminded me of something I
need to look into.

Is it possible for an RPG program to write and read directly to/from DVD?
We currently have a data archive routine which writes directly to a 3490
We'd like to get rid of the 3490.  The archive system was originally
designed about 15 years to write to tape instead of doing a save and restore
in order to protect us from any changes in the save format.  Also
theoretically, it would be easier to convert the contents of the tape should
we ever need to read it on another platform.
