Once your setup is working correctly, you can remove the cable (FC1827,
right?) from the serial port on your 520 and you will see the message hit
QSYSOPR saying that it's no longer connected (CPI0961 I think). When you
plug it back in, you'll get a corresponding message (CPI0962 I think).
We've tested it several times.

We did they back a few months. But how do I know the system thinks it's
still attached?

No no no. Read this again:

So I can plug/unplug/deplug/replug to my heart's content and nothing will
happen. My program won't do anything because _it_ doesn't know because the
_system_ doesn't know. At least that's the way I read it.
