Sorry for the latecoming addition to this thread, but I was out a fewdays. But I agree with Brad Porter, that Tom's comment was great, assummarized by this little bit:

Perhaps the best direction is _not_ to try to link iSeries or i5 or System i5 
back to AS/400s.

The best thing that ever happened to the System/38 was that it wasreincarnated as a different name, as the AS/400. Did S/38 users have anytrouble adapting to that name change? It has really become a differentmachine since it came out.
