Let me guess security reasons eh?  Brings back memories of using simple 
equipment to listen in on phone conversations.  I don't know why more 
people don't use VPN or SSH communications to block this versus using old 
technology that could just about be hacked using two Dixie cups and a 
string.

I think what you are looking for is "ICF" or Interactive Communications 
Facility.  Been a LOOOONG time.  But here's some trails to sniff:
