Officially you should use QSYS2/SYSCOLUMNS.  It's actually a logical file 
built across a different table in a different library, but I'd use 
SYSCOLUMNS.  See also QSYS2/SYSTABLES.  I did a little work (very little 
work) on MS SQL Server and they use the same names SYSCOLUMNS, SYSTABLES 
for their listings.  You add a new field, or new file, and they're updated 
instantly.  And it's nice for the newbie to i5/os to see something 
familiar.
