Yeah, CMD objects would be a reasonable analogy.  In fact, it would be nice
to have automatic support for varying length lists (and data structures as
well).

I'm pretty sure CL doesn't support all of the prototype attributes that,
say, RPG supports.  But that would be part of the feature.  If you used an
attribute that wasn't supported in a given language, you'd get an error
message when you tried to compile the prototype.  That would certainly help
avoid a lot of the errors we get today when we try to "guess" what the
correct translation of a C-language prototype is.  And then IBM would only
need to ship a single set of prototypes for the APIs.

In CL I *think* everything is passed by reference, although I also seem to
remember some strangeness about single-character values.
