I am considering getting a system with 10 gig of memory and 35-40 gig of
disk.
The main box would be an AS400 Server 9406-270 with 2063 and 1502.

That box would work very well for the intent you have, although I would go
with 4 drives, with a minium size of 17gig each. 17s are on the used
market now for about $750. Any smaller drive and you would be constrained
to only V5R3, no OS past that will run on smaller drives. The 10Gb of
Memory will help with the new OS's and the functions you wish to perform.
Consider having dual ethernet adapters to provide failover and load
balance since there may be quite a bit of traffic, depending on the
messages you monitor.

Having said all that, you should wait a week or two and see what may
develop. A new smaller i5 may be a more economical approach with a piece
of equipment that will not get obsoleted quite so quickly. Email me
privately if you would like more design information.
