- Purchase price. Linux wins.
- Installation and configuration time. Some discrepancy, but "maybe"
iSeries wins.
- Domino license. Wash.
- Hardware warranty costs. Linux wins. Will have another Domino/Linux
server in the cluster. If Linux server dies, then we simply replace the
server. Hope that it will last long enough to be obsolete. Any
maintenance fees on commodity hardware like this are normally priced to
buy a new box once a year anyway.
- Some staff time to administer. "Maybe" iSeries wins. However, I have
an open pmr for a week or so now as to why my dang ifs save spikes several
hours a few nights a week when overall system performance, or the size (or
number) of data saved from the ifs is not a consideration.
- Utility cost. Really hard to compute. Probably spend more time
calculating cost then what I'd spend on it. Ok, there'd be an extra two
port switches for both cluster members.
- Backup solution/integration. Will use TSM. Some thought process
involved. Let's estimate large and say two days thought time. Will
probably only backup once a week or so since we will have cluster solution
and it is only archive type data. 5-10 tapes at $100/ea. Hope to reduce
nightly Domino save by one tape a night. That's a reduction in 10-20
tapes at $100/ea. Summary: iSeries wins, but not by much.
- Backup/DR implications. Will have Domino clustering out of the box.
Don't know if anyone hear has done a full system restore of a Linux
server. I have done several unload/reloads of i5/os. Let's say 2-3 days
to test/document DR plan. However, removing all this archive data from
iSeries will reduce the downtime of the live Domino data (and other
applications in case of a full unload/reload) when it comes to
save/restore.

It's hard to find bigger i5 bigots than Group Dekko but these disk prices
do gag. But I do love the raid 5 disk on iSeries and have had to replace
several disk drives with zero downtime. Gotta love that.
