I'll back up what Chuck and Paul said. Years ago I installed a 5250 boat anchor at our company's mechanic shop. For some unknown reason a driver with a dump truck full of dirt decided to disgorge his load on top of it. In a panic the foreman called me; I went out and proceeded to carefully shovel away the dirt.

When I finally was able to see the screen, it was just smiling, as if to say, "Got anything you want me to do?"

I did open it up and vacuum out the fan and insides. But that was it.

Couple of hundred, tops. And they sit in dusty, dirty environments and just
run and run. NO WAY any normal PC is going to do that. I know this for a
fact. We HAVE and a UPS PC in an office in most of these areas and these
things are having constant problems; CD drives quit working, ditto for
diskette drives (although they aren't used much), over heating, etc. But
that is one device doing that. They are 4 or more terminals in these same
offices and the same number right outside of them that just run and run and
run. I cannot IMAGINE the support nightmare I would have if they were all
PC's...

It's been years since I priced a dumb terminal. Just out of curiosity, what
do they go for these days? If you can get a good basic PC for under $400, I
can't imagine why you'd want to spend more than that on a dumb terminal.
