Windows is English (U.K.) and the data transfer was DMY. It's funny
that Excel will happily work out DAY, MONTH and YEAR but then fail to
sort correctly. Perhaps this is something they worked on in Excel 2003,
I'm on 2000 here.

Fortunately, there's an O2K3 upgrade doing nothing in the store cupboard.

Right - now I'm on Excel 2003 I find that dates formatted as 13/12/05 actually gets Excel to throw up an error about two digit years. However, with dates in the 13/12/2005 format, doing a sort gets Excel to complain that 'some cells formatted as text contains numbers'. If I chose 'Sort anything that looks like a number, as a number' it works correctly.

Thanks for your help.

Now, to find a few thousand quid to upgrade all our Office users!
